What is Retinitis Pigmentosa?

Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) is a group of rare, inherited eye diseases that cause gradual vision loss. It happens when the light-sensitive cells in the retina, called photoreceptors, break down over time. This leads to difficulty seeing in low light, loss of peripheral (side) vision, and eventually, central vision loss.

What are the symptoms of Retinitis Pigmentosa?

  • Night Blindness (Nyctalopia) – Difficulty seeing in low light or darkness, often the first noticeable symptom.
  • Loss of Peripheral Vision (Tunnel Vision) – Gradual narrowing of the field of vision, making it hard to see things to the side.
  • Sensitivity to Light (Photophobia) – Increased discomfort or difficulty adjusting to bright lights.
  • Difficulty Seeing Details (Central Vision Loss) – As RP progresses, reading and recognizing faces may become harder.
  • Slow Adjustment to Light Changes – Trouble adapting when moving from bright to dark areas and vice versa.
  • Glare Issues – Lights may seem too bright, or there may be halos around them.
  • Loss of Color Vision – In later stages, distinguishing colors can become challenging.

Our PBS Segment

In this video we share our story.

I write a lot about Retinitis Pigmentosa to try and raise awareness for the disease that afflicts both of my children. As a family, it’s difficult to balance privacy with awareness. It is also difficult to expose your vulnerability to others. But in the end, finding a cure is the most important thing, as is raising money for research.
